Pharmacological properties
Mechanism of Action:
Cefepime is a 4th-generation β-lactam cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity intended for parenteral use. It exhibits bactericidal action and is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including most strains resistant to aminoglycosides or 3rd-generation cephalosporin antibiotics. Cefepime inhibits the synthesis of enzymes in the bacterial cell wall. The drug is highly resistant to β-lactamase hydrolysis, has low affinity for β-lactamases encoded by chromosomal genes, and rapidly penetrates gram-negative bacterial cells.
Indications
Adults:
Infections caused by cefepime-sensitive microorganisms:
– Respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia;
– Uncomplicated infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissue;
– Complicated intra-abdominal infections (used in combination with metronidazole);
– Uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis);
– Septicemia.
For empirical therapy in patients with neutropenic fever.
For the prevention of postoperative complications in intra-abdominal surgery.
Children:
– Pneumonia.
– Urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis.
– Skin and subcutaneous tissue infections.
– Empirical therapy for patients with neutropenic fever.
– Bacterial meningitis.
Method of Administration and Dosage:
The medication is intended for parenteral administration. The dose is determined individually by a doctor, depending on the severity of the disease, patient age, infection site, and renal function.
The usual dosage for adults and children weighing more than 40 kg is 1 g intravenously or intramuscularly every 12 hours.
The typical duration of treatment is 7–10 days. Severe infections may require longer treatment.
